TRDA goes to Space Day 2001

Tallahassee, FL – Every year during the Florida legislative session, an impressive group of Florida’s space industry companies and agencies all meet at the State’s Capitol for Space Day.  Attending were the Technological Research and Development Authority (TRDA) along with NASA, The Boeing Company, United Space Alliance (USA), and Lockheed Martin, among a host of others representing the space initiative in Florida.  This year’s event was held on April 2, 2001.

Space Day is an opportunity for the leading space agencies and organizations to help make the Florida legislators aware of the importance of the space industry in Florida and abroad.  Each participating company and organization has the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the Florida’s legislators.
A part of the day’s activities consisted of a communication link between the astronauts onboard the International Space Station (ISS) and the Florida’s House of Representatives.  The Speaker of the House Tom Feeney initiated the conversion with the ISS and opened any questions to the floor of the House.  In addition, astronauts were also present in the House of Representatives to answer any questions from the floor regarding space flight and environment.

The Florida’s space industry continues to prove itself to be a worthwhile initiative. The space initiative is not only for the benefit of space exploration, but also for the benefit of mankind through the advances of technology and research that come from the space industry.  Space Day is an exciting way to stimulate the awareness of these benefits and communicate this message to those who make decisions for Florida’s future by bringing space down to earth.
