TANGIDYNE CORP. RECEIVES ASSISTANCE

FROM NASA OUTREACH PROGRAM

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Feb. 3, 2004) – Tangidyne Corporation, which develops and manufactures piezoelectric (quartz crystal type) sensors, has turned to the Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP) for assistance in finding a high temperature cable system to monitor a radio frequency device in furnace conditions.

Based in Syracuse, N.Y., Tangidyne develops and manufactures sensors capable of measuring select properties of thin film coatings, chemical vapors and biological agents. These products are utilized in the optics, semiconductor, security and defense sectors.

“We were looking for a coaxial cable system that could monitor a radio frequency device and withstand temperatures of 300-500 degrees Celsius,” said Scott Grimshaw, Tangidyne president.  “When I heard of SATOP, I submitted a Request for Technical Assistance (RTA) seeking a supplier of high temperature cables or a design that would accomplish our objectives.”

Grimshaw learned of SATOP, which is funded by NASA and provides free technical assistance to small businesses, from the Mohawk Valley Economic Development Growth Enterprises Corp. (EDGE).

SATOP accepted Tangidyne’s request and partnered the company with Parker Hannifin, the world’s leading diversified manufacturer of motion and control technologies and systems. Bob Benward, a principal engineer with the company’s Electronic Systems Division, was assigned the RTA.

“I reviewed the request and provided the proper direction and source for the high temperature cables,” said Benward.  “The ceramic system recommended addresses the product requirements,” said Grimshaw.  “This solution will be integrated into a new product for sale in mid 2004.”

The Tangidyne Corporation RTA also presented SATOP New York with a unique challenge.  “This technical challenge was refreshingly different from others I have worked on in the past,” said SATOP project engineer, Madi Kalibala.  “It’s great that as people continue to learn about SATOP, we are receiving a vast array of RTAs.”

As for the quality of SATOP’s aid, “the representatives go out of their way to assist you, are always courteous and are fast in their response,” said Grimshaw.  “You couldn’t ask for more.”
