SATOP launches from Johnson Space Center

Houston, TX – The Clear Lake Area Economic Development Foundation (CLAEDF) launches the expansion of the Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program (SATOP) at a reception located at the Johnson Space Center Visitor Complex on April 12, 2001.  CLAEDF, in partnership with the State of Florida’s Technological Research and Development Authority (TRDA), has supported and managed the SATOP for 2 years in the Clear Lake area only.  The CLAEDF has modeled their program after the TRDA’s SATOP.  The TRDA has been administering the SATOP in Florida since its inception in 1995 in conjunction with Kennedy Space Center (KSC).

The Space Alliance Technology Outreach Program lets small and medium businesses tap into the topmost minds within America’s space program to solve technical challenges for free!  Utilizing a network of partnering aerospace companies, universities, colleges and NASA centers that provide SATOP with the professionals to solve the challenges outlined in the brief forms submitted by businesses.

At the reception, special guest House Majority Whip Tom DeLay made the announcement that the SATOP has expanded statewide in Texas.  In addition, the

announcement explained that the SATOP benefited from a $6 million grant from NASA to expand the Florida and Texas programs and would be a multi-state partnership with Florida, New Mexico, New York, and Texas to provide free engineering technical assistance to small businesses.  Mr. Jim Reinhartsen, executive director of CLAEDF, presented an award to Congressman Tom DeLay in appreciation for his efforts in supporting the space program and the SATOP.  Mr. Jay Honeycutt, president of Lockheed Martin, was also presented an award from CLAEDF for his efforts in supporting and establishing the SATOP in Florida in 1995 while he was the center director of KSC.

The space industry continues to prove to be a valuable initiative. The space initiative is not only for the benefit of space exploration, but also for the benefit of mankind through the advances of technology and research that come from the space industry.  SATOP communicates this message by stimulating the awareness of these benefits through helping businesses.  This expansion will broaden the outreach and re-establish the public’s confidence in the US Space program. The SATOP accomplishes this by bringing space solutions down to earth.
