Florida/NASA Business Incubator Tenant Awarded SBIR Contract
Digital Projection Developer, Chromalux Receives Contract from Air Force

Titusville, Fl. – Florida/NASA Business Incubator tenant, Chromalux, announced today that the United States Air Force has evaluated and recommended a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract award to the company.  Under the SBIR award Chromalux will develop and manufacture an ultra high-resolution electronic projector.  SBIR Phase 1 contracts fund projects up to $100,000.

In response to the Air Force’s request for a proposal to support the development of reliable, easy to maintain visual system technologies with high resolution, contrast, and fidelity, Chromalux submitted a detailed description of their electronic projection technology currently under development. The Air Force requires these technologies for use in realistic air-to-air and air-to-ground training environments. The Air Force recognized that the field-of-view, brightness, and contrast of practically every visual system available today is far less than what pilots actually see looking out of real aircraft.

When fully developed, the Chromalux digital electronic projector will be the only digital projector of its kind to provide the resolution required by the government for use in simulators, especially aircraft simulators.

Potential clients include the Department of Defense and other governmental agencies that will use these projectors in simulation equipment worldwide.  This technology will also excel in the new Digital Cinema marketplace, where all of the reel-to-reel film projectors in every movie theater throughout the world will eventually be discarded and replaced with digital projectors.

Chromalux recently moved into the Florida/NASA Business Incubation Center to complete the development of and establish manufacturing facilities for the projector.  “Start-up businesses come to incubators for the opportunity to grow in a secure and supportive environment,” said Dave Kershaw, director of the Florida/NASA Business Incubation Center. “We are pleased to see Chromalux receive the SBIR award and we look forward to seeing the company successfully commercialize this new technology.”

Established by the Technological Research and Development Authority (TRDA) in 1996, the Florida/NASA Business Incubation Center helps accelerate the success of technology-based, small businesses by providing affordable space, shared office services and fulfilling enterprise development needs to give companies a strong competitive edge.  The Incubator is managed through a joint partnership of Florida’s TRDA, NASA-Kennedy Space Center and Brevard Community College.
